Case Summary

Background

Hu Daoping, also known as Wu Jun, was 34 years old and was from Kaixian County, southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality. Hu was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for theft in Chongqing in 1995. He broke out of jail and escaped to Sichuan in June 1998.

The offence

Local police said Hu had killed seven people in the past two years. The seven victims included two jewelry shop owners, two policemen, and three security guards, and they were murdered during robberies. Police also said Hu robbed jewelry and cash during robberies.

Hu also attempted to rob the treasury of the Yuchi County Post Office in January this year and attempted to rob a jewelry shop in the city of Guang'an in April this year, but both crimes failed.

Investigation

Local police said the killings and robberies were linked to Hu Daoping. Police stated Hu was caught in Yuechi County in southwest China’s Sichuan Province.

Police said Hu robbed more than 400,000 yuan (about 49,300 US dollars) worth of jewelries from the Jintai Jewelry Shop in Yuechi on Dec. 1, 2003, and robbed 180,000 yuan (some 22,200 US dollars) in cash from the Baimiao Credit Cooperative on September 6 this year. Police said Hu was responsible for these robberies.

Arrest

Hu Daoping was caught on September 10 by the Yuchi Public Security Bureau.

Trial

Hu was sentenced to death.
