Major Singh was a chronic opium smuggler and lived for thirty-four years evading police under assumed identities.
Police officer SP Gurpreet Singh said Major Singh was “cool” in taking a life and that he had also murdered a Punjab Police Constable who had found his changed identity and address in order to serve summons from different courts where he was facing charges of smuggling opium.
Major Singh was also known as Jagga and Jagan Nath.
Major Singh had been arrested a number of times for supplying opium.
In 1971, when Major Singh was out on bail, he killed a fellow narcotic smuggler, Mukhtiar Singh, due to a dispute over sharing the spoils while both were in Uttar Pradesh to buy the drug. Mukhtiar Singh’s body was not traced until the time described, and his name figured in the list of proclaimed narcotic smugglers.
In 1981, Major Singh, along with a woman, Harbans Kaur, and an accomplice, Dayal Singh, tricked a man into eating a poison-laced food and then threw the man’s body on a railway track. The be-headed body was recovered by police, and it was initially handled as a case of accident. A murder case was then registered after chemical examination revealed the man had been poisoned. The Malerkotla police nabbed Harbans Kaur and Dayal Singh, but Major Singh remained untraceable.
After remaining untraceable, Major Singh fled to Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh and opened a dhaba on the outskirts of the city. Raju, a servant in his dhaba, killed the teenager’s son after some minor problem. Major Singh became enraged, beheaded Raju, cooked his head, and devoured it.
After fleeing from Bareilly, Major Singh changed his identity and became a truck driver. Gurpreet Singh said there was “no change in his temparament” as he mowed down two persons riding a bicycle under his truck as they made some gesture at him.
Gurpreet Singh said Major Singh also confessed killing a person whom he had met in a dhaba in the city, and that both had an argument over something.
