Berthold Wehmeyer was executed because of murder with robbery. He shot a cashier at a food shop with a hand-held weapon and captured about 100 DM from the cash.

Berthold Wehmeyer was executed by guillotine in Moabit Prison, West Berlin, on 12 May 1949.

Outcome

He was described as the last prisoner executed in West Berlin.

Aftermath

Only a few days later, on 23 May 1949, the death penalty was abolished with the announcing of the Basic Law in the Federal Republic of Germany. In West Berlin, which formally did not belong until 1990 to the area of application of the Basic Law, the death penalty was legally abolished on 20 January 1951.
