Background
Samuel Atherley was a former soldier who lived with Mrs Matilda Lambert for seven years. He and Mrs Matilda Lambert had a relationship in which he was required to leave.
The offence
Samuel Atherley murdered his girlfriend, Mrs Matilda Lambert, and her three children, John, Annie, and Samuel, at their home in Arnold, Nottingham, on 10 July. He cut their throats with a razor. Before taking out the razor, he struck Mrs Matilda Lambert over the head with a hammer. After he had cut their throats, he turned the razor on himself.

After turning the razor on himself, Samuel Atherley survived and was treated in hospital.
