Background

Wladyslaw Mazurkiewicz was dubbed the "gentleman murderer" of Cracow, Poland. He supported a lavish life-style on the proceeds of brutal robberies, in which the victims were invariably murdered. At age 45, he maintained luxurious apartments in Cracow and Warsaw simultaneously.

Investigation

Mazurkiewicz was arrested in the Spring of 1956. The police charged him with at least 30 murders of women. Initially, he was indicted for the murders of thirty women. He told the court, "Yes, that's true."

Trial

Mazurkiewicz’s trial took place in August. Only six murders were charged at Wladyslaw's trial in August. He confessed to slaying the victims—four men and two women—in the course of holdups. He was convicted on August 30, 1956.

Sentencing

Mazurkiewicz was hanged on the last day of January 1957, at Cracow’s Montelupich prison.
