Case Summary

Background

Mark Edmonds was linked to the break-in at Cecile’s house on the Tuesday night. The identity of the suspect was established very quickly after fingerprints were found throughout the house.

The offence

Edmonds broke into Cecile’s house on the Tuesday night. Neighbours did not discover the bodies until Thursday evening. Edmonds had left his bloodstained clothes behind and had stolen some of Cecile’s clothes. Edmonds admitted he had killed them.

Investigation

Eleven separate fingerprints were found throughout the house. Edmonds’ fingerprints were on file because he had attempted to burgle a shop several months before in the same area.

Arrest

Edmonds was arrested on 22nd September in London.

After his arrest, Edmonds retraced his journey north with the police following his arrest and showed them where he had discarded the knife in Ellingham, Northumberland.

Trial

Edmonds admitted he had killed them, but he said he had an accomplice. This was not the case.

Sentencing

Edmonds received two concurrent life sentences on 24th May 1985.
