Name
David Evans
Background
David Evans had previously shown violent behaviour. His mother became concerned about his disappearance being linked to the disappearance of Anna and informed the police. The police publicised Evans’s face widely.
The offence
Evans raped Anna. While struggling with Anna in his car, the windscreen got smashed. With Anna’s body still in the boot, Evans went to a garage to get a new windscreen. He then drove 40 miles and dumped Anna’s body in the River Severn at Hampton Wade.
Investigation
Due to increasing publicity in Anna’s disappearance, Evans went to France. A lorry driver in France recognised Evans several days later. There was a confession, and several forensic tests were done to prove Evans’s guilt. Blood found in Evans’s car had the same grouping as Anna’s. Fibres and a button from Anna’s clothes were found in the car. Fragments of glass were found both in the car and on Evans’s clothes, which showed that the windscreen was smashed from the inside whilst he was in it.
Arrest
Evans was recognised in France by a lorry driver several days after he went there.
Trial
Evans made a confession as part of the case. Forensic testing supported his guilt.
Sentencing
Evans was sentenced to life imprisonment with a recommendation of at least 30 years in 1989.
Outcome
Evans received 30 years on a plea bargain to manslaughter in 1989.
