Gattis was convicted in October 1992 of first degree murder in the shooting death of Shirley Y. Slay, 27, his former girlfriend. The date of the offence was 05/10/1990. Gattis admitted shooting Slay once between the eyes on May 10, 1990 but said the gun went off accidentally.
