Case record: Douglas Hines
Background
Douglas Hines Jr. had a previous murder conviction in Texas. He had been paroled from a Texas prison in 1988. He was serving a sentence stemming from a 1974 murder of an elderly woman and had been found guilty of murder with malice in Bear County, Texas, in that year.
Hines had been living on Sweetwater Springs Boulevard before he was arrested on June 18.
The offence
Douglas Hines Jr. faced a preliminary hearing on Aug. 2 for the May 1 death of Nita Nevarez, 57. Hines was also charged with robbing Nevarez and burglarizing her home.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Rupert Linley said: "She was stabbed many times in the face, neck and chest."
The district attorney’s office said the motive for the killing appeared to be theft because Nevarez’s television set, jewelry, and a Social Security check were taken.
The murder weapon has not been recovered.
Investigation
Deputy Dist. Atty. Rupert Linley said Hines was acquainted with Nevarez.
Arrest
Hines was arrested on June 18 and remained in County Jail without bail.
Trial
The district attorney’s office filed special-circumstances allegations against Hines, which meant he may face the death penalty or a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
One basis for the special circumstances sought by the district attorney was that Hines had a previous murder conviction. Two other grounds alleged that Hines killed Nevarez during a robbery and a burglary.
Sentencing
Hines was sentenced to 15 years to life in Texas in 1973 and paroled in 1988.
In California, Hines received a life sentence in 1993.
Outcome
A 42-year-old man was charged with murder in the May slaying of a Linda Vista woman, and his special-circumstances allegations created potential exposure to the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole.
