Liu Mingwu was picked up by police after he "acted suspiciously." A police official in Liu'an, identified only by the family name Yuan, said he was detained late last month in Liu'an, a city in Anhui province.

The semi-official China News Agency reported that Liu was found carrying a bloody knife wrapped in newspaper.

The offence

Police said Liu Mingwu killed his victims with bricks and knives. Yuan said the bodies were burned. Police described the victims as homeless people, and said there were 29 victims.

Yuan gave no indication of a possible motive. Yuan said Liu was believed to have killed people in several cities in Anhui, neighboring Jiangsu, and in Shanghai.

Investigation and mental state

Yuan said Liu suffered from minor mental illness, but doctors determined he was fully aware of his actions. Yuan said:

"He will bear full responsibility for the crimes,'' Yuan said.

Trial and potential penalty

Yuan said murder convictions in China often bring the death sentence.
