Background
Yang Mingxin was a 39-year-old farmer from Chenggu county in northwestern Shaanxi province in northwestern China. He killed nine fellow villagers and injured three others in a fit of rage on June 23.
The offence
An axe-wielding farmer hacked nine people to death in a dispute over 10 geese. The dispute began when Yang had refused to sell 10 stolen geese for fellow villager Guo Baoning. The oldest victim was aged 71 while the youngest was a four-month-old baby girl.

Yang attempted suicide by hanging himself and drinking insecticide after the massacre but was rushed to hospital and saved. Yang ran amok following a heated dispute with fellow farmer Guo Baonging.
