Background
Bai Ningyang carried out an attack at a kindergarten in Shiguan village in Gongyi, Henan, People’s Republic of China. The kindergarten was reported to have been run illegally. Local accounts said the female teacher had rejected Bai Ningyang’s advances.
Two days prior to the attack, on May 6, Bai had a quarrel with a farmer who stopped him when Bai was using a newly paved road. Later that day Bai armed himself with two knives and chased the man through the village. When Bai’s father tried to intervene, Bai took a five-year-old boy hostage, but the child managed to free itself and Bai ran away.
The offence
On May 8, 2006, at about 9 a.m., 18-year-old Bai Ningyang entered a classroom on the second floor of the kindergarten. In the classroom there were 21 children and a female teacher. Bai threatened them with a knife and forced the whole class to the back of the room.
Bai then locked the door and poured gasoline from two bottles onto the floor. Before setting it on fire and escaping, he let one child go because he knew the child’s parents.
12 children died and four others and the teacher were wounded. Two five-year-old children died at the scene, ten more succumbed to their wounds in hospital, and four others as well as the teacher were injured.
Investigation
After the attack, an extensive search operation was carried out involving 800 police officers.
Arrest
The next day, during the search operation, Bai was found hiding in a cave in the nearby mountains and arrested.
Trial
Bai was sentenced to death in December 2007.
