Denise Labbé was convicted of the murder of her 2-year-old daughter, Catherine. The case began on May 30, 1955, when the trial of Denise Labbé and her lover Jaques Algarron began for the murder of Catherine.
Background
Denise Labbé met Jaques Algarron in 1954 at Rennes, in France. Jaques Algarron was a philosophy student and was described as reading the works of Friedrich Nietzsche, considering himself to be an example of Nietzsche’s Superman. He told Denise to have sex with other men so that she could “beg forgiveness” from him. Eventually, he asked for “the supreme sacrifice” and directed her to murder her daughter.
Denise Labbé was orphaned at the age of 13 and worked hard to make a life for herself. Catherine was the result of one of Denise Labbé’s past relationships.
The offence
Jaques Algarron asked Denise Labbé to murder her daughter, Catherine. Denise tried three times but was unable to do it until she succeeded.
On 8 November 1954, Denise Labbé drowned Catherine in a wash basin.
Investigation
The police were alerted. Denise Labbé told the police the whole story. She was charged with murder, and Jaques Algarron was charged with provoking it.
Trial
The trial of Denise Labbé and Jaques Algarron began on May 30, 1955. The court found Denise Labbé guilty of murder. The case was presented as involving two victims: Catherine and Denise Labbé herself.
Sentencing
Denise Labbé was sentenced to life penal servitude. Jaques Algarron was given 20 years hard labour.
