The offence

Charles Lee Duffy pleaded guilty to kidnapping Priscilla Culberson, raping her, and severely beating and strangling her.

Priscilla Culberson was identified as 48 years old. She was headed to a bus stop on her way to work. Duffy kidnapped her, raped her, and then severely beat and strangled her on June 24, 1997.

After Priscilla Culberson did not show up for work as usual, her relatives told police she was missing and then went searching on their own.

Later, the victim’s 20-year-old daughter found Priscilla Culberson’s nude body in a wooded lot off Campbellton Road in southwest Atlanta.

Investigators said Culberson fought her killer. Investigators also said that Culberson’s clothes had Duffy’s blood, and that semen was present and tested this year. Investigators said that blood and semen connected Duffy to the victim.

Duffy pleaded guilty to murdering two women in DeKalb County in 1997.

One of the DeKalb County victims was Gwendolyn B. Wyche, 42, who was described as the daughter of the Rev. O.L. Blackshear Sr., pastor of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Duffy was described as believing to have shot Gwendolyn B. Wyche. She was shot and Duffy allegedly used the same gun two days later.

Another DeKalb County victim was Pok Yeo Kim, 52, who was standing behind the counter of her husband’s store when Duffy allegedly shot her.

Investigation

Police sought a slaying suspect and searched Wednesday for a man they believed killed a minister’s daughter and the wife of a Korean grocer.

Investigators said the blood and semen were tested this year and connected Duffy to Priscilla Culberson.

District Attorney Paul Howard announced Duffy’s indictment despite Duffy’s insistence that he was innocent.

Investigators said police got a tip on the case last year, after which the murders and the Atlanta killing remained cold cases for years.

Arrest

He also pleaded guilty last year to murdering two women in DeKalb County in 1997.

Sentencing

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Michael Johnson sentenced Duffy to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
