Name: Valery Kopylov
Background
Valery Kopylov was a homeless man who lived in a hole he had arranged in a forest near Barnaul in the Altai region of Siberia. After serving a prison sentence for unspecified crimes, Kopylov never returned home and went into the forest to dig himself a shelter.
The offence
Valery Kopylov went on a killing spree after police believed he had been living in the forest dug-out in the Siberian region of Altai. Police believed he murdered 12 people nearby and another six in other areas. Many of the victims were homeless, and their identities remained unknown.
Kopylov killed other homeless people with whom he had quarreled. The court heard that Kopylov could face a life prison sentence if found guilty.

Police believed Valery Kopylov had gone on a killing spree in the Altai region. Kopylov allegedly told a woman living with him about the killings, and she then went to the police.
