Background
R. Kuppusamy (36) of Konnaiyampatti near Ponnamaravathy was convicted as a serial killer.
The offence
A Mahila Court convicted R. Kuppusamy to undergo five life sentences for murdering five women in the district between April and June 2009. The court found him guilty in each crime, including one case that involved rape and murder. In all five murders, Kuppusamy robbed the victims of jewellery after strangulating them to death.
Trial
R. Kuppusamy was found guilty in each crime by Judge M. Pitchammal in the Mahila Court. The judge sentenced him to five life sentences to run consecutively.
Victims and incidents
- The first murder he committed was on April 9 at Therkku Thalampatti near Namanasamuthiram, where the victim was a 19-year-old girl Anjalai.
- A month later, he murdered Chellammal (65) at Chathirapatti village near Viralimalai.
- The third was a rape and murder case of a 38-year-old woman Vallikannu, reported at Kakkathikulam near Viralimalai in the June first week.
- The same month, he killed two more women—Thiruvayi (40) and Karupayi (70)—at Puthambur village near Pudukottai.
- The court stated that he destroyed the evidence in one of the cases.
Sentencing
Judge M. Pitchammal sentenced Kuppusamy to undergo five life sentences to run consecutively for murdering five women. The judge also sentenced Kuppusamy to undergo 10 years of imprisonment each for committing robbery in every case.
Outcome
R. Kuppusamy was convicted and sentenced by the Mahila Court for five murders between April and June 2009, with one rape and murder case included, and robbery of jewellery committed in all five murders.
