Background
Oleg Murayenko was a 29-year-old man convicted of murdering six women in the northern city of Petropavlovsk between March and November 2000. He already had three convictions. He was also found guilty of beating up inmates at the prison where he had served his earlier convictions. One of the prisoners died of his injuries.
