Background
Mika Kalevi Muranen was born in 1971 in Kotka, Finland. He was a conscript. On Sunday April 17 1994, Mika Kalevi Muranen returned to the barracks in Hamina from a holiday.
The offence
Mika Muranen stole an assault rifle from the barracks and escaped to his hometown Kotka. He dressed in army clothes and took a crossbow with him in addition to the rifle.
He shot two of his neighbours with the crossbow:
- Reino Vulkko, 53
- Sirkka Vulkko, 54
On April 19 1994, he shot mailman Matti Olli, 45, with the assault rifle.
He also shot randomly at nearby houses and at police officers who were after him.
Investigation
During the chase, police shot the dog with a submachine gun. The police chased Mika Muranen for a day before slightly wounding him.
Arrest
Mika Muranen was arrested after the police chase.
After he was arrested he regretted that his military service would be terminated.
Trial
Mika Muranen was found to be mentally stable for the trial.
Kotka district court sentenced him to life in prison.
Sentencing
The Kotka district court sentenced Mika Muranen to life in prison for three murders of first degree.
The court also sentenced him for eight attempted murders and three attempted manslaughters of first degree.

Mika Muranen started serving his sentence in Mikkeli state prison.
Aftermath
Mika Muranen was serving his sentence in a Laukaa labor prison in 2006, when he gave an interview for a Finnish crime magazine Alibi.
Mika Muranen applied for parole in December 2007 and was paroled in December 2007.
