Case record: Donald Murphy
Background
Detroit police had fifteen unsolved homicides of women on the books when they arrested Donald Murphy on December 15, 1980. Murphy was 36 years old and was described as an ex-convict and an unemployed construction worker.
The offence
Murphy was charged with the deaths of prostitutes Cynthia Warren and Cecilia Knott.
Cynthia Warren was beaten to death on October 23. Cecilia Knott was stabbed and strangled two weeks later, on November 7.
Murphy also claimed additional victims for the year:
- Prostitute Jeanette Woods, age 24, had been raped, beaten and strangled on April 18; her throat was slashed.
- Diane Burks, age 22, was found in Detroit on June 14; her body was hogtied and strangled.
- Betty Rembert, age 26, was stabbed in the neck on October 8 and finished off by crushing blows to the skull.
Investigation and arrest
Officers were satisfied with Murphy's confession in the cases of Warren and Knott, but homicide investigators believed their suspect was “not finished talking”.
Officers also already had a suspect in the last three slayings. Local athlete David Payton confessed the murders after 84 hours of police grilling, but he later became anxious to recant and charged third-degree tactics. Police were described as “frankly embarrassed” by Murphy's recital of intimate details in those crimes. A “compromise” was reached when murder charges against Payton were dismissed in March 1981.
Trial
Murphy later pled guilty on two counts of murder.
Sentencing
Murphy was sentenced on July 27, 1982, to two concurrent 30-year prison terms.
Outcome
Murphy pled guilty on two counts of murder (Warren and Knott) and received two concurrent 30-year prison terms.
Despite confessions from two separate suspects, the murders of Woods, Burks, and Rembert remained technically unsolved.
Other details
Murphy was described with a motive of sex and as a lust killer of black prostitutes. He was associated with five victims via confession.
