The offence

Daniel Nunez and William Satele were charged with murder in the 1998 slaying of a young couple who were shot while saying good night outside the boyfriend's Harbor City condominium. Each man was charged with two counts of murder. Authorities said they were affiliated with a Wilmington gang, and they could face the death penalty if convicted of the double homicide.

Robinson had been standing at Fuller's car as she started the engine when, police believed, someone walked up from behind and shot four rounds. Police said the bullets passed through Robinson and killed Fuller.

Fuller lived with her mother and stepfather, an Inglewood police officer, in Los Angeles. She was about to start a new job, her family said. Robinson worked with his father as a mason.

Investigation

Authorities linked the weapon to the killings after investigators matched it to spent casings from the scene using ballistics tests. Investigators used ballistics tests to match a Norinko assault rifle banned under state law with spent casings from the scene of the slaying.

Investigators believed the suspects did not know their victims and were not aware of their relationships. Authorities said the victims were shot several times at close range. The case had baffled detectives.

Police said the victims had no criminal background or gang affiliations. They were not robbed, and none of their past relationships yielded any motive.

Arrest

Daniel Nunez and William Satele were in jail for possession of an illegal assault rifle when investigators linked the weapon to the killings. They were arrested on suspicion of possessing the assault rifle within 28 hours of the October 29 killings of Renesha Fuller (21) and Edward Robinson (22). The firearm was found during a traffic stop in the Wilmington area.

Court and sentencing

Daniel Nunez and William Satele were sentenced to death on September 19, 2000.
