Raymond Plunkett was executed in the Nevada State Prison on June 30, 1944. He was a native of Holly Pond, Alabama, and at the time of his death was 30 years old.
The offence
Raymond Plunkett was executed for murdering his 5 month old baby.
The murder took place in Ely in eastern Nevada on December 10, 1942 while the mother was away working at the Troy Laundry. After killing the baby, Plunkett attempted suicide by slitting his wrists with a straight razor.
Plunkett in a statement said that he felt in his own mind that if he killed the baby he was not good enough to live, so he attempted suicide. Testimony in his trial showed that he had given orders to various people to leave his baby alone and not to interfere with it whether it was crying or not because he wanted to make it tough.
