Case details
Lino Renzi, aged 45, was ordered to closed psychiatric confinement on July 2013.
Maria Pia Guariglia, aged 73, was the victim. She was Renzi’s mother.
Timeline
- July 2013 — Police found Maria Pia Guariglia’s mutilated body in Renzi’s apartment and Renzi was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
- July 2013 — Renzi was ordered to closed psychiatric confinement.
Background
Lino Renzi had a history of psychiatric problems and had been released from a care institution the previous month into the care of his mother, whom he was accused of killing.
The offence
Police found evidence in Renzi’s apartment indicating that Maria Pia Guariglia’s remains were present while Renzi was cooking. Police discovered intestine chunks frying on a grill.
In the apartment, police also discovered several pieces of human body in a freezer, oven and pots. The rest of the corpse was found in a bathroom and showed severe mutilation to arms and legs.
Renzi later confessed that his mother had not died of natural causes. He said she had been brutally beaten to death by himself after a quarrel, and then dismembered into pieces with a saw and a butcher knife.
Investigation
Police responded to the apartment after a neighbor complained of a disgusting gas odor coming from Renzi’s apartment. Police found that the odor was not a gas leak; it was linked to decomposition and remains cooking in the home.
Police estimated that Maria Pia Guariglia had been dead about three days. An autopsy was planned to determine the exact time of death.
Arrest / custody / medical evaluation
When police entered the home, Renzi was found lying on his bed nude. He was taken to a hospital for an evaluation.
Police reportedly found prescription drugs on a kitchen counter.
Outcome
Lino Renzi was ordered to closed psychiatric confinement on July 2013.
