Background
Albert Everette Sala was a native of Oakland, California, and he was 38 years old at the time of his execution. He had an extensive criminal record going back to when he was thirteen.
Sala was serving a sentence for rape in San Quentin in California when he escaped from a harvesting gang on September 6, 1945.
The offence
Sala was convicted of killing Albert McCollum in Elko County in eastern Nevada on September 6, 1945.
After hitchhiking that day, Sala was picked up by McCollum. They traveled together across Nevada. In the eastern portion of the state, Sala decided to rob McCollum. Sala could not find all the money he thought McCollum had, so he kept beating the victim with a monkey wrench and a hammer. McCollum later died of his injuries.
Sentencing
Sala was executed in the Nevada State Prison on August 23, 1946.
