On the night of June 28, 1994, after Deputy Sheriff Len J. Rowell pulled the suspect over and called in the tag number, Jimmy Earl Whitt exited the vehicle shooting. Deputy Rowell was struck six times in the vest and once in the shoulder as he reached for his weapon. Deputy Rowell fell to the ground unconscious and was then shot twice in the face.

After murdering Deputy Rowell, Jimmy Earl Whitt was stopped by Lieutenant Coy Smith of the Alabama Public Safety Commission. As Lieutenant Smith was calling in the tag number from inside his patrol car, Jimmy Earl Whitt shot him in the head, killing him.

Jimmy Earl Whitt then committed suicide after being surrounded by federal agents later in the day.
