Case Summary

Background

Ma Yong, aged 43, was arrested in China and accused of robbing and killing 12 women in southern China over a five-month period. He was described as preying on job seekers in Shenzhen, a boomtown in southern China. His female partner was Duan Zhiqun, aged 20, who was arrested on October 23.

The offence

Ma Yong and Duan Zhiqun posed as prospective employers and lured women, looking for work, to their home described as an “office.” Ma Yong called himself “Mr Xie.” Ma Yong and Duan robbed and killed the women, and the bodies were dumped all over the province of Buji.

Investigation

A young woman from the home of Yong and Duan was reported to police on October 13, 2003. After that report, the couple were arrested quickly.

Arrest

Ma Yong was arrested on October 12, 2003. Duan Zhiqun was arrested on October 23.

Trial

At their trial, Ma Yong and Duan Zhiqun pleaded guilty to the murders of twelve young women.

Sentencing

They were sentenced to death for their crimes in November 2003.
