Case Summary

Background

John David Young was 38 years old and was an employee at a local aircraft plant. Ingram City Marshal Rowan Zachry said Young apparently was the shooter in the deaths of his two young children, their mother, and their grandmother. The family was new to the area and had no record of domestic disturbances since they moved to Ingram.

Ingram was about 75 miles northwest of San Antonio.

Authorities reported that John David Young had lived in Kerr County for a couple of years and had no criminal record in Texas. They said he relocated to Kerr County from Colorado. Although not confirmed, it was believed that Starr Young worked at Hilltop Nursing Home in Kerrville. John David Young was employed by Mooney Airplane Co.

Both children attended Ingram Elementary School.

The offence

Five people were dead after an apparent early morning murder-suicide in Central Texas. John David Young was found in a mobile home with his family members. All the victims had gunshot wounds, and the two children were still in bed.

Investigation

The case was being investigated as a murder-suicide, but officials said they would not know conclusively until autopsies were completed.

KCSO investigators tried to piece together the motivation for the killings. Until autopsies were completed Monday, Zachry said:

“I can’t tell you who our shooter is for sure,” Zachry said.

Zachry said:

“We will have to review the 911 tapes to determine who made the call, but we are pretty certain it was the grandmother (Hughes),”

Zachry also said:

“Anytime you deal with children, it makes things tough,” Zachry said Sunday. “They are really the innocent victims in this case. We will know a whole lot more tomorrow about what exactly happened."

John David Young was found in a mobile home along with Johnathan Young, 9; Mason Young, 6; Starr Ann Young, 42; and Linda Dale Hughes, 64. All had gunshot wounds.

Aftermath

Linda Dale Hughes was found alive when law enforcement officers responded to an assault call. She died on the way to the hospital.

The call first came into emergency call dispatch as an assault. The dispatcher who received it only heard breathing at first. When deputies arrived on the scene, the dispatcher could hear the deputies knocking on the door. Officers forcibly entered the locked home to discover the scene.

The 911 call was placed at 2:18 a.m.

Other details

The mobile home was in the 100 block of Third Street in Ingram. A 9 mm pistol was laying near John David Young’s body. The two boys were found in their beds with multiple gunshot wounds.
