Background
Doreen Baird was a fourteen-year-old schoolgirl who was baby-sitting five children.
The offence
One of the children, sixteen-month-old June Croft, was crying more than the others. Baird tied a scarf around June Croft’s neck to try and stop her crying. June Croft died of strangulation a little while later.
Trial
Baird stood trial at Sheffield Assizes. She pleaded diminished responsibility. Medical evidence described her as emotionally immature and of low intellect.
Sentencing
On 27 November 1958, Baird was found guilty of manslaughter and sent to an approved school.
