Background

Charrier was raised until the age of five by the anarchist Mécislas Golberg (or Goldberg).

The offence

On July 25, 1921, Charrier and two accomplices attempted to rob First Class travellers on the Paris-Marseilles train. The attempt went badly, and a person was killed.

Investigation and arrest

Afterwards in Paris, Charrier was arrested. His accomplices were killed by the police.

Trial

Charrier went on trial on April 28, 1922.

Charrier argued before the court his anarchist illegalism and defied it to take his head. The court sent him to the guillotine, described as a “simple idealistic robber.”

Sentencing and execution

At four o'clock in the morning, Charrier approached death in song, singing “l'Internationale”, “L'hymne au 17e” et “La Carmagnole”. He was guillotined in Paris on August 22, 1922.
