Andrew Chabrol was executed by electrocution in Virginia on June 17, 1993.

Background

Andrew J. Chabrol was a former Navy officer. He was 36 at the time of execution. He had tried to develop a romantic relationship with Melissa Harrington while she was in his command. Melissa Harrington rejected his advances and complained to his superior. Chabrol said the complaint damaged his career and ruined his marriage. He left the Navy in 1991 and began planning revenge, keeping a computer journal in which he referred to Mrs. Harrington as "Nemesis."

The offence

Chabrol planned to abduct, rape and kill the victim because she rebuffed him. Melissa Harrington was abducted, raped and murdered by Chabrol. She was abducted at 6:25 am from in front of her Virginia Beach townhouse.

Chabrol tied the victim spread eagled to the bed and bound and gagged her with tape. Chabrol used a stun gun on the victim. The victim died by suffocation and strangulation. Chabrol planned to burn her body.

The victim was driven to Chabrol's house in Albemarle Acres in Chesapeake, where she was brutally killed.

Chabrol kept a computer journal in which he referred to Mrs. Harrington as "Nemesis."

Trial

Chabrol pleaded guilty to the 1991 murder of Melissa Harrington. He refused to fight the death sentence handed out a year before his execution.

Sentencing

Chabrol was sentenced to death. He had the shortest wait of any of the 20 Virginia inmates executed since the Supreme Court allowed capital punishment to resume in 1976.

Stanley Berkeley was sentenced to three life terms for murder, rape and abduction.

Appeals

Chabrol opted not to appeal his conviction.

Outcome / aftermath

Chabrol expressed no regrets for having committed the homicide, which he viewed as an act of revenge. He was put to death in the electric chair at the Greensville Correctional Center on June 17, 1993.
