Background
Yevgeny Gorbunov was a soldier. He was 20 years old when the incident occurred. Gorbunov was called to military service from the settlement of Mogoch, Irkutsk region, in 1996. His schooling was eight grades.
The incident was linked with poor morale, mental abuse, severe hazing, and underfunding in the Russian military, which had led to a series of shooting incidents involving soldiers.
The offence
While on guard duty at a military installation, Gorbunov ran amok and killed a company commander and five fellow soldiers on guard duty, as well as an officer. He opened fire with his “AK-74” submachine-gun at ammunition depots of one of the garrisons in the Chita region.
Investigation
Local police were put on alarm. The regional Federal Security Service and the military prosecutor’s office started an investigation. Police and federal agents in the Chita region of Siberia announced an all-points bulletin for Gorbunov.
