Background
Oleg Protsenko was an 18-year-old Russian border guard in late January, 2000. He had been routinely beaten and humiliated by the older conscripts in the army and decided to desert.
The offence
Protsenko needed a car to escape. One night, he left his unit in the Kaliningrad area on the Baltic Sea, taking a Kalashnikov assault rifle with him with the idea to steal a car. The first car he came across contained five people (three men and two women). Protsenko shot and killed all five occupants of the car.
Investigation
Protsenko left a suicide note in the car’s glove compartment that contained only three words and gave no insight into his crime. The note read: “I'm sorry, Mum.”
Outcome
Protsenko’s body was found early the next morning in the stolen car, which he had driven into a forest. He committed suicide by shooting himself the same day.
