Background
Sergei Lepnev was an 18-year-old first-year cadet at a Russian military school. He was a first-year cadet at the Kamyshin Higher Military Construction School in Volgograd Oblast. His decision to open fire came after he decided that a career in the military was not his calling.
The offence
On March 8, 1997, a first-year cadet at a Russian military school opened fire on his classmates, killing six people and wounding two others. The rampager shot and killed the officer on duty during the changing of the guard at the academy. Lepnev shot dead the 32-year-old captain of his guard detachment and five other cadets. In addition to the fatalities, three other cadets were wounded. After the shooting, Lepnev and a friend fled the Kamyshin Higher Military Construction School.
Investigation
After the shooting, the cadet and his friend fled with two automatic rifles and ammunition. Twelve hours later, the gunman and his buddy were arrested hiding inside a home in Kamyshin. Military investigators cited by NTV suggested that the motive could have resulted from severe hazing, described as a chronic problem for young recruits in the Russian military. The motive for the shootings remains unclear.
