Background

Abdelaâli Hadi was a homeless man living near the place where the bodies of the eight victims were discovered.

Police described him as a “psychopath homeless”.

The offence

Abdelaâli Hadi was sued for murdering nine children in the town of Taroudant (near Agadir).

He was accused of premeditated serial assassinations and use of arms, torture and violence, rape of minors, kidnapping and sequestration of minors.

He confessed to the crimes and to the sexual abuse of his victims whom he buried after murdering them.

Abdelaâli Hadi stated he committed his first crime three years ago.

Investigation

Mutilated bodies of eight teens, aged between 13 and 16, were found in plastic bags in Taroudant late last month.

The death of one of the victims dated back to less than three months, while the other victims’ deaths dated back from 6 months to three years.

Traces of blows were found on their heads and bodies.

Soil was found in the bones of the victims, and the bodies were buried before they were unearthed again.

Arrest

Abdelaâli Hadi was aged 42 at the time of sentencing, and he was born in 1962 in Taroudant.

During questioning, he confessed to a ninth victim being the first child he killed after molestation.

He said he buried the child in a garden near the “Sidi Bou Dheb” graveyard and digged out the corpse a month later and threw it in a public dumping ground.

Trial

The appellate court of Agadir on Thursday night sentenced Abdelaâli Hadi to death for murdering nine children in the town of Taroudant (near Agadir).

The court also handed down sentences ranging from 1 to 4 year imprisonment to three individuals, charged with rape of minor and non-denunciation of crime.

An 18-day instruction occurred before Abdelaâli Hadi appeared before a tribunal Thursday.

Sentencing

On December 2, 2004, the appellate court of Agadir sentenced Abdelaâli Hadi to death.

He was condemned to pay a symbolic Dirham to the National Observatory of Children Rights and to the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH).

He was also ordered to pay compensations ranging from 3,000 Dhs (around US $333) to 20,000 Dhs (around US $2.222) to the families of the victims.

Outcome

Abdelaâli Hadi was sentenced to death.

Three individuals received prison sentences ranging from 1 to 4 year imprisonment for rape of minor and non-denunciation of crime.
