He was hanged for murder in the yard of the Jefferson County jail in Birmingham, Alabama, on June 25, 1915.

Sydney Jones left a note in his cell confessing to thirteen separate homicides. The confession described eleven victims as black men and two victims as whites, described as a Nebraska deputy sheriff and a brakeman on the Mobile & Ohio railroad.

The note ended on a wistful note:

"I'm sorry I missed Richard Moore Sept. 12, 1912," Jones wrote. "Just one more would have made an even number."
