Background
Courtney Matthews, 19, was a soldier at nearby Fort Campbell and worked at a Taco Bell for 10 days as a part-time dishwasher and food handler. He was charged with four counts of murder in shootings at the Taco Bell.
The offence
Matthews forced his co-workers to lie on the floor after the restaurant closed and then shot them. The safe and the cash register were cleaned out during the robbery. The amount taken was not disclosed. Four Taco Bell workers were killed.
Investigation
David Housler confessed to being the getaway driver and lookout man. He was sentenced to a mandatory term of life in prison.
Arrest
Courtney Matthews was arrested Wednesday on charges of killing four workers at the Taco Bell during a robbery. When he was led into the police station, he told reporters: "I'm innocent. I'm innocent. I didn't do a damn thing,".
Trial
Courtney Mathews was found guilty of helping gunman and fellow Fort Campbell soldier Courtney Mathews, 23, in the killings. Defense attorney Michael Terry told the jury: "You've just convicted an innocent 23-year-old man."
A former soldier was convicted of murder for the deaths of four Taco Bell workers during a robbery in 1994. David Housler, of Radcliff, Ky., was found guilty of helping the gunman and fellow Fort Campbell soldier Courtney Mathews. Mathews had worked at the Taco Bell for 10 days as a part-time dishwasher and food handler, and after the restaurant closed he forced co-workers to lie on the floor before shooting them.
Sentencing
David Housler was handed a mandatory sentence of life in prison. Courtney Matthews was sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1996.
Other details
Police said there was no sign of forced entry at the restaurant. The safe and cash drawers were empty, but the amount taken wasn’t disclosed. Orlando Sentinel (February 03, 1994) reported that Matthews was charged with four counts of murder in Sunday’s shootings.
