Case Summary

Background

Chen Peiquan was an English teacher with a history of mental illness. He had lived in hospitals for months at a time since his mental illness began six years before the attacks. Over the previous six years, he was sent to hospital sometimes for two or three months, sometimes for more.

The Yang Gan Middle School employed him despite his illness. The school head, named Zhou, said that since Chen became ill the school had always paid what the school should pay for him, that the school had never cut his medical fees, and that Chen had returned with a certificate which said he was okay, which is why the school allowed him to teach.

A separate account said that the school did not pay for the stays and that Chen, who earned about R870 a month, could no longer afford medical care and medication.

The offence

Chen Peiquan went on a rampage at Yang Gan Middle School in Guangdong province, stabbing people who answered when he knocked on doors at the teachers' dormitory.

Authorities said he slashed four students to death and wounded three others, including a teacher. In one account, three students were killed immediately and the fourth died in surgery. In another account, Chen killed three children and injured another three in a rampage with a knife at the school, and a teacher also died. A hospital official said one of the injured children was in a coma.

At about 16:00, Chen began knocking on doors and cut whoever answered with the knife. Chen fled to the roof when police arrived.

Investigation

Local police and school leaders said it was not immediately clear what had triggered the attacks. The case was under investigation.

Arrest

Chen Peiquan was arrested after fleeing to the roof of the building. The report said he was taken into custody after a struggle with police.

Other details

Chen Peiquan was 35 years old at the time of the attacks. One official at the public security bureau of Suixi county said Chen was arrested on Saturday at Yang Gan Middle School in Guangdong province. A local police official told AFP that Chen randomly stabbed whoever answered when he knocked on doors at the teachers' dormitory. Another account said he fled onto the roof of the school when police arrived and was taken into custody after a struggle on Sunday.
