Background
Anthony J. Santos was convicted of stabbing another man to death inside a Bethlehem apartment. His court-appointed attorney was Mark Refowich, who said he intended to file a motion seeking a new trial, claiming Santos' former lawyers were ineffective. Santos fired Robert Patterson and Matthew Potts after the jury found him guilty of third-degree murder in February.

The offence
Prosecutors said Powell and Santos argued on and off all day March 9, 2006, starting when Powell refused to loan Santos $5 for cigarettes. The spat escalated into a fight that took place in the kitchen of the Sheets Street apartment just after midnight March 10, 2006. During the fight Santos stabbed Powell in the chest with a three-inch folding knife, puncturing an artery and piercing one of his lungs. Powell bled to death at a hospital several hours later.
Trial
Santos was convicted of third-degree murder in February. Relatives of the victim, Craig Powell, spoke in court in March when Santos was originally scheduled to be sentenced. The proceeding was postponed so Santos could have drug and alcohol, psychological and psychiatric evaluations.
Sentencing
Anthony J. Santos was sentenced on June 15, 2007 to 20 to 40 years in prison. A Northampton County deputy escorted Santos to his sentencing. In court, Refowich stated he intended to file a motion seeking a new trial, claiming Santos' former lawyers were ineffective.
