An accomplice, Michael Shing, of Redwood City, made a statement to police that implicated Scully in the series of unsolved Bay Area murders. Police spokesmen told the press:

“Right now we feel the motive was drugs. Probably, there were some sexual elements involved, too.”

The case was made because Scully “had neglected to remove his fingerprints,” despite the drums having been cemented shut.
