Background

There was a pattern of deaths connected to Apartment 31 at the Cranetown Apartments in Montclair, New Jersey. In November 1981, tenant Lillian Harris, 83, died from what was diagnosed as a heart attack while her apartment was being burglarised. On April 18, 1983, tenant Joan Light, 51, died under identical circumstances at the same address, while her apartment was being burgled and she had a heart attack according to the coroner. The apartment was later occupied by Sarah McHale, 68, whose replacement as tenant in Apartment 31 was found dead in the living room on September 2, smothered with a pillow.
