Background

Yan Yanming (b. 1983 in Ruzhou, Henan, China) was a Chinese mass murderer who killed on November 26, 2004 eight boys and injured four at a High School.

The offence

On November 26, 2004, Yanming entered a dormitory at the School and attacked the boys with a knife, killing eight of them. After killing them, Yanming escaped.

During the attack, Yan Ming entered the dormitory of Ruzhou's No. 2 High School and slipped into the rooms where male students slept. He slashed some students’ throats and stabbed others in the heart. Eight died without rising and four survived.

Yan Yanming was convicted of attacking the boys on Nov. 25, in the city of Ruzhou.

Investigation

Police seized Yanming the next day after he overdosed on drugs at his parents’ home.

Yan’s mother turned him in to police after he attempted suicide on the day following the attack.

Police said Yan broke into the school dormitory at 11:45 p.m. on a Thursday night.

The government said Yan confessed and said he slashed the students out of hatred.

A survivor quoted Yan as saying:

"Don't blame me."

Arrest

Yan Ming was arrested after he failed to commit suicide following the attack, with his mother reporting him to the local police.

Trial

After trial, Yanming was sentenced to death.

Outcome

Yan Yanming was executed on January 18, 2005 in Pingdingshan.

The attack was described as the sixth in a string of deadly attacks on Chinese schoolchildren that began in August.

The ordeal was described as the fourth knife attack reported at a Chinese school or day care center in as many months, with earlier assaults leaving one child dead and 42 people injured.

Chinese President Hu Jintao issued a nationwide order in September for schools to hire guards and tighten security.

Ruzhou was described as being located about 450 miles southwest of Beijing in Henan province.
