Three months after his release from the Oregon State Prison, Archibald drove into a service station in Livermore, California. At Livermore, Archibald robbed Waters and then forced him into Archibald's car. They then drove to east of Sparks, Nevada, at a place called Painted Rock. There, Archibald forced Waters to walk to a rocky peak overlooking the Truckee River. Archibald then shot Waters at close range.

Arrest

Thayne Archibald was apprehended in Baker, Oregon. While in Baker, Oregon, he was involved in more service station holdups. He was taken into custody when his automobile developed generator trouble and was unable to leave the scene.
