Thayne Archibald was a native of Utah. At the time of his death, he was 22 years old. He had a long criminal record and had been in the Utah Industrial School for five years. After that, he spent time at the Oregon State Penitentiary. Three months after his release from the Oregon State Prison, he drove into a service station in Livermore, California.

The offence

On August 26, 1959, Thayne Archibald was convicted of killing Albert Lawrence Waters.

Three months after his release from the Oregon State Prison, Archibald drove into a service station in Livermore, California. At Livermore, Archibald robbed Waters and then forced him into Archibald's car. They then drove to east of Sparks, Nevada, at a place called Painted Rock. There, Archibald forced Waters to walk to a rocky peak overlooking the Truckee River. Archibald then shot Waters at close range.

Arrest

Thayne Archibald was apprehended in Baker, Oregon. While in Baker, Oregon, he was involved in more service station holdups. He was taken into custody when his automobile developed generator trouble and was unable to leave the scene.
