Case Summary

Overview

Bård G. "Faust" Eithun was a Norwegian drummer. He was best known for his work with the early black metal band Emperor, especially on the releases As the Shadows Rise and In the Nightside Eclipse. He also wrote lyrics for other bands, including Zyklon.

Background

Faust Eithun was born on 21 April 1974.

The offence

Eithun was convicted of murdering Magne Andreassen, a gay man, by fatally stabbing him in Lillehammer, Norway on 21 August 1992.

The murder occurred near the park which eventually held the opening ceremonies of the 1994 Winter Olympic Games.

Investigation

Some in the media speculated that the murder was related to black metal, satanism or fascism. Eithun later stated in an interview: "I was never a satanist or fascist in any way".

Jørn Tunsberg of the band Hades Almighty claimed that the murder was "an impulse killing" and that "it had nothing to do with black metal".

Kjetil Manheim was a friend of Eithun at the time, and later remarked: "the situation that Faust was in wasn't a good experience. He felt that he was attacked. He was in shock".

Trial

The verdict stated that Andreassen, unarmed, approached Eithun in central Lillehammer and suggested they take a walk together. Eithun agreed and followed Andreassen to the Olympic park.

Andreassen’s body was discovered the following day with 37 stab wounds and massive head injury as a result of being repeatedly kicked.

Sentencing

Eithun was sentenced to fourteen years imprisonment.

Outcome

Eithun was released in 2003 after serving nine years and four months.

Other details

Eithun was associated with Emperor and wrote lyrics for other bands, including Zyklon.
