Dmitriy Kopilov was sentenced to ten years in a penal colony in August 2006.
Background
Between June 2004 and August 2005, the Russian city of Chelyabinsk was affected by a series of murders in the city’s forest areas. Six elderly women and one man were murdered.
The offence
Dmitriy Kopilov allegedly stalked his elderly victims and shadowed them until he had an opportunity to attack them without anybody seeing him. He allegedly dragged his victims by their ears and hair into a nearby forest area and murdered them with an assortment of weapons he found at the scene.
The source stated that he used his own knife, and also used stones, metal rods, pieces of pipes, and animal bones to kill his victims.
After killing his victims, Kopilov allegedly robbed them of their jewellery and any money or valuables he found on them. In one case, he only managed to get 50 rubles ($1.87). His only male victim was believed to have been killed because he witnessed the murder of Dmitriy Kopilov’s sixth victim and was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Investigation
The investigation revealed that Kopilov had killed and robbed six women and a man who had accidentally witnessed the last woman’s murder. The juvenile killer “worked” from July 2004 to August 2005.
Trial
At his trial, the court ruled that Dmitriy Kopilov was sane at the time he committed the crimes.
A court verdict stated that Kopilov was sane and he was sentenced to the maximum prison sentence that can be given to juveniles, 10 years.
Sentencing
In August 2006, a Chelyabinsk city court sentenced Kopilov to ten years imprisonment in a penal colony.
A press-service representative of the local Prosecutor General’s Office told the Interfax news agency: “A 17 year-old citizen of Chelyabinsk city (South Ural region) has been sentenced to ten years in a penal colony for several murders and robbery,”

Kopilov received a sentence of ten years in a penal colony for several murders and robbery.

Dmitriy Kopilov was currently serving his sentence at the colony of common regimen.
