Case Summary

Background

Jian Xueliang was a farmer in Mingxing village of Zhashui county in Shaanxi Province. He was 35 years old.

Before the manslaying, Jian Xueliang had served a sentence for raping a woman who had just married into the family.

The offence

Jian Xueliang hacked eight members of a family to death with an axe.

The killings included two children aged four and 10, and a pair of 15-year-old twins. Jian killed Yang Rongwen and his wife, Yang Rongwen’s four-year-old daughter, Yang Rongwen’s ten-year-old nephew, and Yang Rongwen’s 80-year-old grandfather. He then went to the home of Yang Rongyuan, Yang Rongwen’s brother, and killed Yang Rongyuan and the twins of his.

Jian Xueliang carried out the manslaying out of revenge in mid August.

Investigation

Local policemen caught Jian.

Jian was arrested in western Shaanxi Province after the killings.

Jian was caught on August 18.

Trial

On September 14, the Shangluo City Intermediate People’s Court sentenced Jian Xueliang to death penalty, depriving him of his political rights to life.

The sentencing included civil compensation of 12,000 yuan (about US$1,450) against him.

Jian Xueliang did not appeal following the first trial.

Outcome

Jian Xueliang was executed on September 27, 2004 in Zhashui county of Shaanxi Province.

Other details

The killings occurred in the village of Yang Rongwen’s family in Mingxing village of the county.
