Background

Hadj Mohammed Mesfewi died on June 13, 1906. He was a cobbler and a public letter writer. He was reported to have killed at least 36 women.

The offence

The bodies of 26 women were found under his shop. An additional ten were found buried on property owned by Mesfewi.

Mesfewi and an accomplice would lure young women to dinner, administer a narcotic, and then murder them in their sleep. The victims were then robbed of any valuables they possessed and subsequently buried. The victims were also mutilated with a dagger.
