Background
Mahavir Razak was sentenced to death in a human sacrifice case.
The fast track court of Hazaribag found that Razak, for the sake of fulfilling his personal ambition, kidnapped a child and sacrificed it before Goddess Kali. The judge described it as “a heinous crime and all the accused deserve severe punishment,” said the judge.
Mahavir Razak suffered from a serious disease, including TB, and could not be cured after treatment. Razak approached Subhash Bose alias Khepa Baba, a tantrik, at his ashram in Bhurkunda. Baba assured Razak that he could be cured if he sacrificed a human being before Goddess Kali.
Razak then approached a rickshaw-puller, Birju Bhuiyan, who kidnapped a boy named Munna Kumar, son of one Vijay Paswan, on December 8, 2003.
Razak, Baba and Bhuian took Munna to a lonely place and killed him by slitting his neck. When the child did not come back home, Paswan lodged an FIR with the police station concerned on December 9, 2003.
The police recovered the body packed in a gunny bag thrown into the Nalkar river.
Trial
The fast track court of Hazaribag awarded death sentence to Mahavir Razak and life imprisonment to three others: Shashi Thakur, Subhash Bose alias Khepa Baba, and Birju Bhuiyan.
The additional district and sessions judge, Ramendra Nath Roy, found all of them guilty of the crime and pronounced the judgement. After examining all witnesses, the judge found that Razak kidnapped a child and sacrificed it before Goddess Kali. The judge also said:
“This was a heinous crime and all the accused deserve severe punishment,”
Sentencing
Mahavir Razak received the death sentence on March 24, 2007. The court also imposed life imprisonment on Shashi Thakur, Subhash Bose alias Khepa Baba, and Birju Bhuiyan.
