Background
Theofilos Sechidis was a 24-year-old Greek law school student.
In May 1996, he confessed to murdering his parents, sister, grandmother and an uncle on the northeastern Aegean island of Thasos.
Relatives reported them missing two months before his confession.
The offence
Sechidis told police that he murdered each family member separately over a five-day period.
He said he hacked up their bodies and placed the remains in black plastic garbage bags, leaving them in a garbage dump.
Investigation
Police said Sechidis confessed to murdering his parents, sister, grandmother and an uncle on Thasos in May.
News of the murders covered the front pages of almost every Athens daily paper.
Private television channels carried live coverage of police searching for body parts.
Trial
During his trial, Sechidis said he thought his family members were plotting against him and that he had to act in self defense.
On June 20, 1997, he was found guilty of five counts of murder.
