Case Summary

Background

Yasuo Takeda was an unemployed 52-year-old man. He was a former bar owner from Gifu.

Investigators said he had debts of 25 million yen and had planned a murder-suicide.

The offence

Takeda drove to the Gifu-Minami Police Station with four dead bodies in the back seat of his car. The bodies were those of Takeda’s 38-year-old wife, Nobue Takeda, his son Yuta, 6, and his daughter Nana, 4, and his 80-year-old mother, Kei Takeda.

Investigators said the necks of the bodies showed signs of strangulation with some kind of cord. Takeda told police that he killed his mother, his wife, and their two children.

After the killings, Takeda slashed his left wrist.

Investigation

Police questioned Takeda after he surrendered to police.

Investigators said Takeda had attempted suicide before surrendering, but the attempt had failed.

Arrest

Takeda was arrested after turning himself in to police in Gifu Prefecture.

Police said Takeda drove up to the Gifu-Minami Police Station around 7:35 a.m. on Monday with four dead bodies in the back seat of his car.

Takeda confessed straight away.

Takeda said he killed his 80-year-old mother, his 6-year-old son, his 4-year-old daughter, and his 38-year-old wife in that order in the van while parked alongside a river on Saturday night.
