Case Summary

Background

Frederick Hinson was a carpenter. He shared a house with Maria Death at Wood Green. They lived together as man and wife despite the fact that he already had a wife in his native Scotland.

In the autumn of 1869, Frederick Hinson began to suspect that Maria Death was having an affair with a man called William Boyd.

The offence

On 4th October, Hinson waited for Maria Death and William Boyd outside Wood Green station. As they walked out, Hinson savagely attacked William Boyd. A passer-by dragged off the crazed man and William Boyd’s life was saved.

Hinson dragged Maria Death home. He pulled out a gun and shot her in the chest before beating her about the head with the butt. Hinson was satisfied that Maria Death was dead. He reloaded and went off in search for William Boyd.

Hinson found William Boyd in a stable and coldly shot him dead. He then made a weak attempt to cut his own throat.

Investigation

Frederick Hinson was immediately arrested by a passing policeman and charged with the double murder.

Trial

Hinson was sentenced to death at the Central Criminal Court on 26th November.

Hinson was sentenced to death at the Central Criminal Court on 26th November and was later hanged by William Calcraft.

Outcome

The sentence was carried out in Newgate on the 13th December 1869.
