Huang Hu owned a failing kindergarten in Wuchuan and blamed competition from a nearby school. Police officials described him as previously managing a nearby rival nursery, which failed.

The offence

On November 24, 2002, Huang Hu put rat poison into the salt used to make corn porridge in the kitchen of a kindergarten.

Students and teachers who ate the tainted food suffered spasms and vomiting. Seventy children and two teachers were poisoned, and they were hospitalized. All were treated and released.

Investigation

On November 24, 2002, Chinese police arrested Huang Hu on suspicion of poisoning 70 children and two teachers at a rival school.

Police officials said Huang was jealous of the school's success.

A local government official said:

"It's hard to say whether the poisoning will be lethal because victims are likely to have fits at any time over the next three days,"

In mid-December, Huang Hu was convicted after a swift prosecution.

Huang Hu was sentenced to death on December 18, 2002.
